Beware of Nationwide Funeral Scam Targeting Bereaved Families
Unfortunately, we've learned of a distressing nationwide scam affecting families coping with the loss of a loved one.
Here's how it works: fraudulent individuals posing as representatives from funeral homes reach out to grieving families. They might claim you are due a refund or seek sensitive personal information about the deceased.
If you receive a call from someone claiming to be from a funeral home and asking for financial or personal information, please take the following steps:
- Decline any payments and NEVER share credit/debit card numbers, banking information, social security numbers, or the decedent's date of birth.
- Politely inform them that you'll be contacting the funeral home directly and end the call. Then, reach out to the funeral home using a verified, legitimate phone number.
- Trust your instincts and feel free to terminate the call abruptly if it raises suspicion or seems like a scam.
It saddens us to bring this to your attention, but we believe that by raising awareness, we can better equip you to handle such situations should you encounter them. Stay vigilant, and remember, we're here to support you during this challenging time.
